It was an all greater Toronto area affair at the top of the 2019 Ontario Masters Provincial Championships with Team Carwardine of the Leaside Curling Club winning the Women’s championship, while Team Norton of the Oshawa Curling Club were champions on the Men’s side.
The Carwardine team, comprised of Sandra Thain, Judy MacLellan, Louise Germaine and Janice Carwardine posted an impressive 6-1 record through the event’s round robin, dropping only a single game to Team Steele in Draw 6. Their winning ways landed them a direct bye to the finals, where they would not falter defeating Team Favel 7-3 thanks in large part to a pair of late end steals in the 6th and 7th.
Gordon Norton with his team of Warren Leslie, Rob Thompson and Gary Downs on men’s side took a much longer route to their provincial championship. Norton posted a 4-3 record through round robin play earning them a tie breaker spot vs Team Hunker. Norton then turned on the offense averaging 8.66 points per game in the playoff series defeating Hunker, then Team Lawton in the semi final to queue a finals matchup with Team Delaney. In the final, Delaney and Norton exchanged blows with the hammer in a tightly contested match with Norton’s big 5-point score in the 6th end being the difference maker. Norton would eventually defeat Delaney 10-8 to secure the championship.
Both teams will now represent Ontario at the 2019 College Clean Restoration Canadian Masters Curling Championship April 1-7, 2019 hosted by the Nutana C.C. in Saskatoon, Sask.
Congratulations to both newly crowned championship squadrons and to all competitors who qualified for the event!
