As new calendar year dawns, two newly crowned U21 Ontario champions have much to celebrate in 2019.
The U21 Ontario Provincial Championships hosted by the Annandale Curling Club in Ajax ON concluded on December 30th with Team Coburn of the Dundas Valley Golf & Curling Club winning the women’s championship and Team Steep of the Galt Country Club taking the men’s championship.
Both teams will now represent Ontario at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Championships in Prince Albert, Sask.
The Coburn rink comprised of Alice Holyoke, Calissa Daly, Kaelyn Gregory and skip Thea Coburn took the road less traveled to the championship victory after having posted a 4-3 record in the round robin – good enough for a tie for 3rd place. They then dug deep having to win a tie-breaker vs Team Auld, the semi final vs Wallingford, and the final vs the top seeded Team Bernard 9-5 to claim the championship.
The Steep rink comprised of Emerson Steffler, Oliver Campbell, Adam Vincent and skip Samuel Steep carried a 5-2 record through the round robin portion of the event secure 1st place and receive a bye to the finals. The championship match was tightly contested coming down to the final end where Steep scored 1 with the hammer for an 8-7 victory over Team Mooibroek.
