Young dreams came true at the Hamilton Victoria Curling Club this past weekend as CurlON crowned two U18 teams to represent Ontario at the U18 Boys & Girls Canadian Curling Championships in St Andrews, New Brunswick.
Congratulations are in order for Team Warriner comprised of Maddy Warriner, Sarah Bailey, Brianne Donegan, Shannon Warriner and coach Bruce Cox & Team Leung featuring Colin Schnurr, Nathan Steele, Scott Mitchell, Josh Leung and coach Renee Lalonde.
The Warriner team carried a 5-2 record through round robin play earning them a first place seed and direct placement in to the final. The final proved to be a hotly contested match but after six ends of close play vs Team Bernar, Warriner broke the game open in the 7th by scoring 4 and securing the provincial victory.
The Leung squad also took a 5-2 record through round robin play, earning them a second place seed and a berth in the semi finals vs team Fayaz. Playing tight defense proved to be a winning strategy for Leung as they bested Fayaz 4-2 in the semi, earning a finals matchup vs team Enman. Leung would continue to limit their oppositions’ scoring in the final with a tight 3-3 score after 8 ends, forcing an extra. Leung would then take a single with hammer in the 9th to win the provincial championship.
Both teams will now dawn their Ontario jackets and represent the Trillium on their journey towards and national title. Best of luck to all – you’ll do Ontario proud!
Intermediate provincial action was brought to the doorstep of the 1000 islands thanks to the Gananoque Curling Club with Team Balsdon (Greg Balsdon, Jordan Keon, Michael Maddin and Peter Laidlaw) & Team Froud (Susan Froud, Sarah Picton, Karin Kell, Jennifer Omand) both winning their respective events in tie-breaking fashion. Congratulations to both teams!
