What began with an 0-2 record and a grim outlook on an event victory ended with a championship banner for Hollie Duncan’s rink of third Stephanie LeDrew, second Cheryl Kreviazuk and lead Karen Sagle from the Royal Canadian Curling Club.
The newly crowned Team Ontario were one of the first teams to be facing elimination in CurlON’s new modified triple knockout provincial format before successfully stringing together six consecutive wins, defeating the previously undefeated Team Danielle Inglis in the final.
The final between the two rinks was a back and forth affair before Duncan scored 4 in the 7th end, opening the largest score differential of the match. Duncan then maintained the pressure with a steal of 1 in the 8th. After surrendering 2 in the 9th to Inglis, Duncan drew the 4-foot with her last rock in the 10th for the 10-7 victory and ultimately, the championship
Despite the “new look” feel to the Duncan rink, they’re laden with experience. Duncan is a former junior champion in Ontario and 2-time CIS champion. Lead Karen Sagle is the 2016 Scotties and Mixed Ontario Champion and boasts several junior curling accolades. Second Cheryl Kreviazuk has ample experience as a 2-time CIS champion, 3-time OUA champion and at national/international events during her time as 5th for Rachel Homan’s rink. Third Stephanie LeDrew was the 2010 Newfoundland and Labrador Scotties Champion, a World bronze medalist as Rachel Homan’s 5th in 2013, and is a 5-time junior provincial champion.
The Duncan rink will now wear the trillium and represent Ontario at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton, BC from January 27th-February 4th.
