Sixteen teams began their journey to become Team Ontario earlier this week as the U21 Provincial Championships took place at the Annandale Golf & Curling club in Ajax, ON.
After countless nail biting ends and many close matches, your winners have been declared. These teams will continue on as your Ontario representatives to the New Holland Canadian Juniors January 13-21st, 2018 in Shawinigan, QC. They are:
Women’s – Team Wallingford – Ottawa Curling Club
Skip: Emma Wallingford
Third: Grace Holyoke
Second: Lindsay Dubue
Lead: Hannah Wallingford
Coach: Doug Kreviazuk/Earle Morris
After a steady 5-2 record in round robin play, Team Wallingford found success in the semi-final match 8-4 vs Team Little. The two teams exchanged equal opportunities before a force by Wallingford in the 8th was followed up by a walloping three ender in the 9th to secure the four point victory. The final was just as close vs Team Murphy with Wallingford required to remove an open stone in the 10th with her last, solidifying an 8-6 win.
This team already has experience at a national level with both Dubue and Holyoke being members of Hailey Armstrong’s 2017 U21 Championship rink who went on to win the Canadian Silver medal.
Men’s – Team Hall – Westmount Golf & Country Club
Skip: Matthew Hall
Third: Jeff Wanless
Second: Joey Hart
Lead: David Hart
Coach: Ray Bushfield/Richard Hart
Team Hall also posted a solid 5-2 record through round robin play before vanquishing Team Leung in the semi final match 8-4. Hall would then go on to face the undefeated Team Willsey in the final, where Hall would be up 3-0 after two ends and never looked back. Using a sequence of forces and blanks in the middle ends, Hall cruised to a 7-2 victory.
The Hall team was already the defending champion in Ontario, who now boast back to back championships. They went on to win the 2017 Canadian Silver medal.
Best of luck at nationals, Team Ontario!
